For East Coast residents, Winter’23/’24 has seemed unusually long. Even with minimal snow, gray skies have been a constant during this winter season. However, with spring beginning, there is a sense of optimism. As Daylight Saving Time kicks in, we are gearing up to revamp our homes for the new season. This month, explore easy ways to transform your space from a cozy hibernation vibe to a more lively and colorful atmosphere. We’ve consulted with the HDI team to get insights on how they spruce up their homes for spring. Here’s what they shared:

1. Lighter and Brighter Textiles

“My approach to refreshing home decor for spring emphasizes not only the transformative power of lighter textiles but also the depth and tranquility that can be achieved through a carefully selected color palette. Drawing inspiration from the serenity of nature, my favorite hues include deep, earthy greens and serene blues. These colors are known for their calming effects, which can make a home feel more peaceful and grounded.

The strategy of layering different textiles such as linen, soft bouclé, and woven materials adds a multidimensional aspect to the home decor. This technique is particularly effective when refreshing bed linens or throw pillows, as it introduces varied textures that invite touch and add visual depth. The choice of materials here is deliberate; each has its own unique texture and feel, contributing to the overall aesthetic in distinct ways. The use of bold colors set against a crisp white backdrop is a classic design principle that brings vibrancy and energy to a room. This contrast not only draws the eye but also can make other elements in the room stand out more prominently.

Be thoughtful and focus on both the visual impact and the emotional resonance of your space. By choosing colors that evoke a sense of calm and incorporating textures that invite interaction.”

2. Bring the Outside in

“Spring is a great time to breathe new life into your home by introducing flowering branches. My preferred method of procuring branches is just taking a pair of pruners into the backyard, but if that’s not an option, florists and even grocery stores usually have a great selection at this time of year. If you’re harvesting yourself, do the shrub a favor and look for any overcrowded or crossed branches, which should be pruned away anyway.”

3. Change Out Your Artwork

“As a fan of gallery walls, I enjoy changing things up in spring. I carefully review the artwork on display and consider if any pieces should be replaced. During our winter travels, my family and I collect new art pieces. On our recent trip to St. Croix, I acquired a beautiful handmade fan and original art by local Caribbean artist, Elwin Joseph. I decided to swap out a less interesting picture for these two new pieces. I believe every corner of your space should be personal and inspiring. Spring offers the ideal opportunity to reassess and update your artwork.”

4. Bring in Clean, Bright Scents

“During this time of year when windows are frequently open, I enjoy changing my candles and oil diffusers to bright and fresh scents. Transitioning from tree scents, cinnamon, and gingerbread to citrus, florals, and clean spring fragrances is a simple way to rejuvenate for the new season. Personally, I find great pleasure in cleaning and organizing! Spring cleaning is an excellent method to bring order to your living space and infuse it with a fresh and clean aroma, providing that renewed feeling spring is known for.”

5. Edit Your Mantle

“Since the fireplace is the central spot in our living room, it provides an opportunity to bring a hint of the different seasons into our home. The mantle is the perfect place to layer decor, assemble unique vignettes, and bring a touch of the spring we’ve been longing for into view.”
